Cutting Edge Technology Found At Engine City

Just off Rt. 287 in South Plainfield, New Jersey, stands a very unique structure. What makes it so unique is that within its walls is one of the only pure diesel mechanics school in the country. Engine City Technical Institute was established in 1969

Engine City, a one of a kind school, has a curriculum that focuses on commercial and industrial diesel. The school trains the students in the construction, reconstruction and maintenance of transmissions, engines, refrigeration units, internal computers, suspension systems, clutches and ABS brake systems. Engine City is proud of the fact that they are one of the first schools in the country to offer an electronic engine course where the experienced mechanic can upgrade skills and receive instruction on intricacies of the cutting edge technology in today's modern equipment. Classes are equipped with actual engines that the students completely disassemble, reassemble, tune and bring into running status while under the guidance of professional instructors.

Small classes average 20 or less students with an average over 50 percent actual hands on education brings each student to the highest levels of professionalism in their chosen field. Businesses such as Federal Express, Ryder Truck, New Jersey Transit and many commercial airlines seek out graduates from Engine City knowing that they will receive some of the finest entry-level diesel mechanics that the industry has to offer.

Engine City keeps on the edge of training technology through the use of computerized diagnostic equipment linked directly to the engines. Teaching with this equipment gives more thorough instruction while challenging each student to attain their highest goals.

In June of 2000 Engine City opened its computer lab becoming one of the first diesel schools in the country to utilize computer-based training for its students. Currently, the lab teaches students the diagnostic software of major engine manufacturers such as Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel.™

The company Thermo King has long worked in partnership with the school in supplying state of the art refrigeration units that are regularly updated.

Due to serious diesel mechanic shortage, employers are becoming very proactive in recruiting trained and qualified entry-level mechanics.
